Tragedy at Sea: The Deadly Sinking of a Tourist Submarine off the Egyptian Coast

Researched, prompted, edited, and published by Soraima on March 27, 2025

A tragic incident occurred today off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, where a tourist submarine named the Sindbad sank during an excursion to the Red Sea's coral reefs.  The vessel was carrying approximately 45 passengers, predominantly Russian tourists, along with crew members.

Reports indicate that at least six individuals have lost their lives, including five Russian nationals and one unidentified person. Among the deceased are two children.

Rescue operations successfully saved 39 passengers, with many sustaining injuries. Those injured, including 14 Russians, three Egyptians, and three Indians, were transported to local hospitals, with four reported to be in critical condition.

The cause of the sinking remains under investigation. The Sindbad submarine, operated independently from the Sindbad Club hotel, offered underwater tours allowing tourists to explore the Red Sea without getting wet.

This incident follows a similar one in November last year when a vessel carrying 30 tourists sank, prompting safety warnings from marine authorities.

The Russian consulate in Hurghada is actively involved in the investigation and is working to provide assistance to the affected individuals and their families.
